The Toronto Blue Jays is currently a Canadian national team competing in the North American Professional League. The Blue Jays play in the Eastern Division of Major League Baseball, as a member of the Eastern League. They have finished second behind the Texas Rangers in the last two seasons. The BlueJays are expected to contend for first place in the AL East this year.

The roster for this year’s season has not been finalized as of yet. But there are some notable names already involved with the club. Carlos Pena is currently the only true left-handed batter on the BlueJays active roster. He was a popular player with the Toronto Blue Sox over the years, but he was traded to the Bluebirds the last off-season. Pena is expected to start at third base this year.

infielder Devon Travis is the only true position player on the Toronto Blue Jay roster. He has played several different defensive positions throughout his career, but most notably as a second baseman and right field. Travis was acquired by the Blue Birds from the San Diego Padres in August of 2009. He has hit well at both of those positions as well, though he has struggled at the plate. Overall, he has been worth every penny as a result.

Right-handed hitting reliever Garvin Wilson was acquired from the Colorado Rockies in exchange for infielder Charlie Frye. Wilson has performed well in relief for Toronto but has also started games at several other positions due to injuries. He’ll likely compete for a role in Toronto down the line, but it appears that the Blue Birds will primarily use him as a setup man. Right-handed pitcher Tom Koehn was acquired from the Boston Red Sox in exchange for minor league pitcher Chris Johnson. Koehn, who is listed as a starter/spot starter on the Blue Jay roster, has pitched at least twice in relief for Toronto. Before this move, Koehn was designated for assignment. The move means that Alex Rodriguez will be the only player on the team to ever start in the majors (he is the only DH). He is one of three players currently listed as the backup plan behind Alex Rodriguez.

Outfielder Colby Rasmus has enjoyed a strong season, batting in the top 10 in the National League in nearly every category. He is especially helpful on offense, however, as he is one of the better hitters in baseball. Toronto hopes Rasmus can develop into a premier hitter, but the club has also brought in some promising young arms this season as well. Zach McMaster has given the club some solid performances, as has outfielder Derek Roy.

The Blue Jackets do have some weaknesses that they need to address over the off-season. CF Joe Thatcher has been consistently ineffective in Toronto, as have several of their outfielders. These issues are easily solved with an off-season purchase of some top-notch talent. The Blue Jackets may have the worst front office in all of baseball, but they still have a very competent GM in Phil Pritchett.

The trade of Couture was unexpected and perhaps even shocked some in the baseball world. But since he was moved so quickly, it is impossible to evaluate exactly how his situation works. It appears as though he was merely moved to a different position, rather than traded to another team. The fact remains that the Blue Jackets will probably contend for second place in the Atlantic Division once Couture returns to full strength. The acquisition of Couture means that the Blue Jackets will have a much better chance at competing next year.
